The Eye is the Lamp of the Body
graphic from http://www.ignitumtoday.com/author/allie/ | In the parable of the lamp, Jesus says that we can be a light to the world. Jesus is talking about sending the light of our faith out into the world. In this lesson, Jesus says the eye is the lamp of the body. This time when he talks about a lamp, he is talking about the importance of seeing the world around us clearly, so that when we do something, it will be from an honest, faithful place. If your eyesight isn't any good, it is hard to see the road ahead clearly. It is easy to make mistakes or make a wrong turn. Jesus tells us that we must try to see things as they really are. We must try to see without letting prejudice, jealousy, judgement, our selfishness or how important we think we are cloud our judgement. That is very hard to do, but Jesus can help! We must always remember that people are all different, but we all are children of God. Sometimes we may take a few steps down the wrong path and are hurtful to others. Other people may disagree with the decisions we make. Sometimes people do things that are very hurtful to us. Sometimes we disagree with how they live their lives. Jesus asks us to follow the Golden Rule, and treat others the way we want to be treated. In Matthew 7, Jesus reminds us "Judge not, that you are not judged. For what judgement you judge, that is how you will be judged." It can be difficult to decide what to do. It can be hard to decide not to join our friends in doing something we think is wrong. Life can be very complicated. As long as we show respect for ourselves and respect for others, look for the good in those around us and think carefully about not only how we feel but also how we make others feel, our eyes will stay clear. With Jesus' help, we can find the right path and be a light to the world. |
