Scroll Craft Project

When Jesus visited the synagogue, he read from one of the scrolls.

In those times, books hadn't been invented so the words of the prophets were written on scrolls and rolled up.

Jesus quoted Isaiah 61 at the synagogue in Nazareth:

The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind,

to set the oppressed free,

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

You will need:
  • 1  legal-sized sheet of yellow or beige paper.
  • 1 8 1/2" by 11" piece of cardstock (any color)
  • fabric or contact paper
  • wood-grained contact paper
  • beads and other decorations
  • 2 empty cardboard (paper towel) rolls
  •  Pattern
  • 8" length of small rope, string, yarn or ribbon

                   plus

  • crayons or colored markers
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • pencil
  • glue and both regular and double-sided tape

Instructions

1.If necessary, trim the towel roll or paper so that the paper is about 1/2" narrower than the towel roll.
2.Write the verse from Isaiah shown in bold above on paper placed in the landscape (wider than it is long) position (or print the verse pattern on the paper).
3.Cut 2 pieces of wood-grained contact paper to fit towel rolls.  Remove backing and wrap the rolls.
4.Lay the piece of cardstock on the table in the landscape. Draw a line 2" from the top of the cardstock and cut along that line.
5.Wrap the strip of cardstock around the paper towel tube and cut so that it fits tightly around the towel with about a 1/2" overlap.  Cut 3 more equal lengths.
6Use a piece of tape to fasten the edges of one strip together and make sure it fits snugly on the end of the towel roll. Remove tape. Trim all 4 strips if necessary.
7.Cut fabric to cover each strip of cardstock about 1/2" narrower than the cardstock and about 1/2" taller than the cardstock.
8.One at a time, cover one side of the cardstock with glue and carefully lay the fabric onto it so that the fabric is even with one side edge of the cardstock and an equal amount of fabric extends above and below the edges of the cardstock.  Press the fabric onto the cardstock smoothly and evenly.  Let dry.
9.Flip each strip of cardstock over and place a line of glue (or double-sided tape) along the top and bottom.  Fold the excess fabric onto the tape/glue strip. Press down and smooth.
10.For each of the 4 cardstock strips: Flip the cardstock fabric side up and apply glue to the exposed end of the cardstock.  Press the glued end of the cardstock onto the back of the other end to form a roll. Reinforce with tape to make sure the ends are firmly connected.
11.Decorate each of the 4 cardstock rolls with beads, ribbon or other decorations.
12. Place a thin line of glue at the top of the towel roll and slide a cardstock roll onto the paper towel about 1/4".  Repeat for the other end of the roll. Do the same for the other towel roll.
13.  Lay the paper with the verse face up on a flat surface.  Tape each edge of the paper onto the paper towel roll.
14.Roll the paper towel tubes toward the center of the paper and tie closed with rope, string, yarn or ribbon.
