Jesus Is Rejected
After Jesus was baptized by John and was tempted in the desert, he returned to Galilee to start his public ministry. People really liked to hear what he had to say ... until he went to his hometown.
It isn't surprising. Jesus had grown up in this town and had lived a pretty ordinary life for 30 years. Suddenly he shows up and says he is the Messiah .... would you believe that could be true of the kid you played with when you were in school? The young carpenter you had hired for a job? Well, the people of Nazareth sure didn't!
He arrived at the synagogue for the Sabbath and spoke. He read a prophecy about the Messiah from Isaiah. The people probably thought he had lost his mind! When he seemed to be comparing himself to Elijah, they really got angry. Nazareth was built on a hill. They grabbed him and took him up to the edge of a cliff and were going to throw him off!
Maybe because it was his hometown and the people had known him all his life, that didn't happen. After all, how would they explain this to their friends Mary and Joseph? Jesus just walked through the crowd and left town.
