Jesus is Tempted in the Wilderness
Right after Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit led him into the desert where he didn't eat for 40 days. During this time, the devil came to tempt him. First, the devil said to the very hungry Jesus, "If you are the Son of God, just turn that stone into bread!" Even though He was really hungry, Jesus wouldn't do it. He quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 "....Man does not live by bread alone, but by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord." The devil transported Jesus to the top of the temple in Jerusalem and dared Him to jump off the building, quoting Psalm 91:11-12. which says the angels would catch Him. Jesus replied with Deuteronomy 6:16, which says that you shouldn't try to test God. The devil brought Jesus to a mountaintop and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. He told Jesus that if He would just bow down and worship him, all of it could be His. But Jesus again quoted Deuteronomy, chapter 6, verse 13, that says you should worship and serve only God. The devil gave up and went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus. |
