In the Bible

John the Baptist

Isaiah 40: 3-5

1  In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!

4  Every valley shall be lifted up, every mountain and hill made low; The rugged land shall be a plain, the rough country, a broad valley.

5  Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Malachi 3: 1

1 Now I am sending my messenger — he will prepare the way before me; And the lord whom you seek will come suddenly to his temple; The messenger of the covenant whom you desire— See, he is coming! says the Lord.

Malachi 4: 5-6

5 Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.
6 He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and swite the land with a curse.

Matthew 3: 1-6

1   In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea

2   and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

3   It was of him that the prophet Isaiah him had spoken when he said, " A voice proclaims: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!"

4   John wore clothing made of  camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist.  His food was locusts and honey.

5   At that time Jerusalem, all of Judea, the whole region around the Jordan was going out to him

6   and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.

Matthew 11: 7-15

7    As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out to the desert to see?  A reed swayed by the wind?

8    Then what did you go out to see?  SOmeone dressed in fine clothing?  Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces.

9    Then why did you go out?  To see a prophet?  Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

10  This is the one about whom it is written:  "Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you."

11  Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

12  From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence and the violent are taking it by force.

13  All the prophets and the law prophesied Elijah, the one who is to come.

15  Whoever has ears ought to hear.
