You will need:

  • paper
  • corrugated cardboard
  • 2 8" X 10" pieces of felt
  • 1 8" X 10" piece of foam
  • leather shoe strings or 3/16" ribbon.

                   plus

  • scissors
  • glue
  •  hole punch
  • scotch tape
  • 2 large books (dictionary, encyclopedia, etc.)
  • marker
  • straight pins

Instructions

Tape pattern to sole to size
1.Trace the bottom of both of your shoes onto paper and cut them out.
2.Trace the outline of each shoe onto cardboard and cut them out. These become the soles of the sandals.
3.Trace the cardboard sole of each shoe onto foam and cut them out.
4.Print two copies of the sandal pattern and cut them out.
5.To match shoe size to sandal pattern:  Position a sandal pattern at back of cardboard sole and lightly tape as shown in picture on the left. Repeat for other side.   Flip over on the floor (so tape is on the bottom). Place foot on the sole. If the back flaps overlap, pin the two sides together at about the center of the heel.   If the front straps overlap, use a pen or a pin to mark the beginning of the overlap on one side.  Remove foot. Use the pin as a guide to make a straight cut to trim back flap.  Remove tape. On one of the sandal patterns:   If the sandal side went too far up the leg, cut off the top sandal strap.  Use marks on the sandal straps to trim.
6. Use the trimmed sandal pattern to cut 4 sandal sides from felt. Trace the pattern onto the felt or pin into place and cut.  Do this 4 times to make 2 sides for each sandal.

Glue cardboard over foam
and edges of sides, put a book
on top and let dry
7.Punch holes in all 4 sides as shown on the pattern.
8.Place a coating of glue on the bottom of a foam sole and carefully position the felt sides.  Cover the top of the matching cardboard sole with glue and press into place over the foam sole and felt sides, being careful to make sure all the edges are even.  Place a heavy book on each sandal and let the glue dry thoroughly.
9.Lace up the back of the sandal and tie at the top.
10.Lace the sandal straps from bottom to top.
11.When both sandals are done, put them on, tie the straps and try them out!
