In the Bible For the first three centuries in America, most Christians accepted the notion that Christmas trees were an insult to the sacred message of Jesus' birth. Religious leaders pointed to the many places in the Old and New Testament that prohibited the worship of idols. Is a Christmas tree really an idol? Martin Luther didn't think so, and today neither do most Christians. We can think of the Christmas tree as a representation of Jesus as God's tree. Below are some verses in which trees and plants are used as symbols for Christ's work on earth. Isaiah 11:1 1 A shoot will come up from the tree of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit.
Jeremiah 23: 5 5 Behold the days are coming," declares the Lord, "When I will raise up for David a righteous branch, and he will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land.
Zechariah 3: 8 8 Now listen, Joshua the high priest, you and your friends that are sitting in front of you - indeed they are men who are a symbol, for behold I am going to bring in My Servant the branch.
Zechariah 6: 12 12 Then say to him, "Thus says the Lord of hosts, "Behold, a man whose name is Branch, for he will branch out from where He is and He will build a temple to the Lord.
John 15: 5 5 I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
