Elijah's chariot craft project

You will need:

  • styrofoam coffee cup
  • small piece of corrugated cardboard
  • red, yellow, or orange paint
  • 3 24" lengths of yarn (suggest yellow, orange and red in any combination)
  • red, yellow, or orange paper
  • 2 brass fasteners
  • craft stick
  • 12" yarn
  • elijah template (color)
  • fire template
  • horse template

                   plus

  • tape measure
  • pen or pencil
  • scissors
  • crayons
  • paint brush
  • scotch tape
  • glue stick
  • hole punch

Instructions
1.Use the bottom of the cup to trace 2 circles onto the cardboard.
2,Cut the circles out of the cardboard and set aside.  These will be the chariot's wheels.
 3. Wrap a tape measure  little over halfway around the cup from top to bottom.  Use a pen to draw a line up the sides and across the bottom of the cup using the tape as a guide.
4.Cut along the lines to make the body of your chariot.
 5.

Paint the outside of the chariot.  Use a "firey" color like red, orange, or yellow.  Let dry.  If desired, paint the inside of the chariot after the outside has dried.

6.Tie the 3 pieces of yarn into a knot at one end. Loosely braid the yard together and secure with a knot at the end of the braided yarn.  Set aside.
7.Print the Elijah template.8
8.Cut out the front and back of Elijah and glue together.  Trim so that the two sides match.
9.  Print the horse template  (one per page; you may want to print 2 horses) on cardstock.
10. Color the horse.
11.

Fold the horse together along the dotted lines.

12.  Cut a 1/4" strip of card stock about 8" in length.  Glue it to the center of the horse's body  (it has been marked in blue in the photo at left for contrast)
13.   Fold the strip down at the top of the tail, fold it over the end of the tail.   The strip will be used to attach the horse to the chariot later.
14. Print the fire template on yellow, red, or orange paper.   If printed on white paper-next, color in the fire!
15.  Cut out the chariot's wings of fire and a set of horse wings of fire for each of your horses (2 sets per sheet).
16.  Glue wings of fire onto each side of the horses and the sides of the chariot.
17. Use the hole punch to make a hole in the center of each cardboard circle/wheel.
18.Use a brass fastener to attach a wheel to each side of the chariot.  Position them near the bottom of the chariot, about 1/4" from the back edge of the chariot.
19.   Use tape to attach a craft stick to the bottom of the chariot.   If you will be using two horses, attach a second craft stick to the first one to make a "t" as shown in photo on the left.
20.  Position the horses in front of the chariot, and use tape or glue to connect the cardstock strip to the craft stick
21. Glue Elijah into place on the front wall of the chariot
22. Drape the braided yarn under the horse's neck, over the back of the horse, and into the chariot.

Variations: Cut slightly smaller wings from a different color and glue onto the larger wing of fire before gluing to the horses/chariots.
Use glitter on the wings of fire.  Create a colorful edging (using paper, string, or yarn) and wrap it around the edge of the chariot.
