The Prophet Elijah

God called Elijah to be a prophet during a time when the worship of false gods was being accepted in Israel.  King Ahab's wife Jezebel worshipped a god called Baal, and Ahab built altars and temples to Baal for her to use. Jezebel was a strong and determined woman, and even had some of God's priests and prophets killed if they caused her problems!
The name Elijah means "My God is Jahweh."  Jahweh (Yah-way) is an ancient way of saying Jehovah, another name used for the one true God.  Even Elijah's name was a loud statement rejecting Baal!  Elijah went to King Ahab and told him that God would bring a terrible drought to Israel for as long as the king allowed the worship of other gods.  Elijah told the king that it would not rain until Elijah proclaimed the defeat of the other gods.
King Ahab didn't believe him, and Jezebel wanted Elijah killed.  Elijah escaped across the Jordan River to a place called Cherith.  A brook provided water and God sent ravens to deliver bread and meat.  Eventually the brook ran dry, so Elijah went to live with a widow named Zarephath.
God blessed Zarephath's oil and flour and it did not run out! When her son died, Elijah stretched over his lifeless body three times, and God brought her son back to life.  All of these miracles assured Elijah that God was going to protect him, and it gave him the courage to challenge the prophets of Baal and other false gods to make it rain.
Over 800 priests of the false gods came together to pray and sacrifice to their gods on Mount Carmel.  From dawn until dusk, they cried out to their false gods to send rain but nothing happened.
Now it was Elijah's turn.  He built an altar to sacrifice to God, and made it really hard because after arranging the wood for the fire, he had water poured all over it.  Wet wood shouldn't burn, but that was not a problem for God!  God's fire fell from heaven and the wood, the offering, the altar and even the dust on the ground burned.    The people who were watching this contest realized that there was only one God, and began chanting "The Lord, he is God!"  Elisha told them to kill all of the false prophets, and this they did.  Elijah brought the people of Israel back to God.  He prayed, and the drought was over - rain began to fall!
This made Queen Jezebel really angry!  Elijah was afraid for his life and went into the wilderness.  Even though Elijah had accomplished a great victory for the Lord, he was exhausted by the effort of facing hundreds of false prophets alone. He wanted God to take his life, but instead an angel brought him food. Elijah made a pilgrimage of 40 days and nights to Mount Horeb.  There he received more instructions, and returned to the populated areas of Israel unafraid.  God led him to Elisha, who would become his successor. Elisha stayed with Elijah through the rest of his life.  Elijah would prophecy the deaths of King Ahab and Jezebel, and King Azahiah.
When Elijah's time on earth was over, he didn't die.  With Elisha watching, God sent a chariot and horses of fire who brought the old prophet to heaven in a whirlwind.
