Parable of the Lost Sheep
The high priests were watching Jesus closely because they did not trust him. They were probably jealous because he drew such big crowds! Jesus was with tax collectors and sinners when he heard the priests and scribes grumbling because he treated these people with kindness and respect. They weren't good enough for a real Man of God! Jesus didn't respond to them directly, but he told a story. He said, "If you were watching a flock of 100 sheep and found that one was missing, wouldn't you leave the flock and go looking for that lost sheep?" Everyone - maybe even the priests and scribes - nodded that of course they would. "And when the shepherd finds the lost sheep, doesn't he bring it back to the herd and celebrate with all his friends?" And, of course, everyone nodded again. Jesus then explained that just like a shepherd tending sheep, Jesus feels the same way about his people. When we lose our way and makes a mistake, Jesus reaches out to us, just like the shepherd who goes looking for his lost sheep. When we ask for God's forgiveness, Jesus reunites us with the faithful and all of heaven joins him in being so happy for our return! | |
