Abraham and Isaac
Abraham loved Isaac very much, and enjoyed watching him grow. It is hard to imagine what he must have thought when God told him to take the son he loved so much to take him to the mountains, kill him, and make him an burnt offering to God. Even though it must have been a very painful decision, Abraham was so faithful to God that he prepared to do just that. The next morning he made preparations and Abraham, Isaac and two servants started on the journey to a mountainous place named Moriah. On the third day of their journey, Abraham saw the place where he was to make his offering. He gathered the wood, a knife, and fire and left the two servants behind. Isaac wondered where the lamb was for the offering; Abraham just told him that God would provide. When Abraham and Isaac reached the right place, Abraham built the altar and bound Isaac and lay him on it. As he reached for the knife to kill his son, he heard the voice of an angel tell him to stop. The angel told him that Abraham had passed this test of faith, and God would provide a sacrifice. Abraham turned to find a male sheep (ram) right behind him. With great joy, Abraham helped his son down from the altar! They made the burnt sacrifice together. The angel told Abraham that, because of his faithfulness, the promises that God had made him - that he would have many descendants, and be a blessing to everyone on earth - would come true. The story of Abraham is told by Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. God's promise was fulfilled. Jesus was a descendant of Abraham. Although God did not make Abraham sacrifice his son Isaac to praise God, God would sacrifice His son Jesus to save all of us. | ||
