The Wisdom of Solomon Scroll Project

Scrollscroll open

In biblical times, there weren't books.  Instead, people wrote on scrolls.  In this project, you can create a scroll of your favorites from Solomon's proverbs.

Solomon's wisdom is believed to have been recorded in the Bible, not just in the Song of Solomon, but also in the book of Proverbs.

Read the wise sayings in the book of Proverbs, especially those found in chapters 10-21 (these are credited to Solomon).

Choose one or more that have special meaning for you.

Once your scroll is complete, read your proverbs aloud and explain why the ones you chose are important to you.

You will need:

  • parchment paper
  • small dowel (you can also use a small metal clothes hanger)
  • 4-8 6" strips of ribbon
  • 1 12" strip of ribbon, string, leather or a shoelace
  • tea or coffee

                   plus

  • cookie sheet
  • scissors
  • hole punch (hole must be large enough for small dowel to pass through it)
  • black magic marker
  • heavy tape (masking, packing, duct)
  • tape

Instructions
 1. Slice a strip about 8 1/2" wide from a roll of parchment paper. (Rolls of parchment paper can be found with the aluminum foil, wax paper, etc. at most grocery stores.)
2. Place the parchment on a cookie sheet and pour coffee or tea to cover it.  Let it soak for a few minutes, then remove and let dry thoroughly.   This process will make the paper look as it did in Solomon's time.

3.

Cut two strips of tape the same width as the paper.  Fold in half over top and bottom edge of the paper to reinforce it.   Cut off any excess tape.

4. Use a paper punch to punch 4-8 evenly spaced holes through the tape and paper at the top and bottom of the scroll.
5.  Write the proverbs you selected in your reading on the scroll.
6.

Run the dowel through the holes at the top and bottom of the scroll as shown on the left.

 7.  Tie one or two ribbons to each of the 4 dowel ends.
8.  Roll your scroll from each end, meeting in the middle.
9.  Tie shut with a bow using the longer piece of ribbon, string, leather, or shoelace.
