Peter, the Rock
Simon and his brother Andrew were fishermen. Andrew brought his brother Simon to meet Jesus after His baptism. Jesus gave Simon a new name, Cephas, which means rock in their native language, Aramaic. Simon became better known as Peter, which is the Greek word (petros) for Rock. After feeding the five thousand, story here, Jesus told his disciples to take their boat across the Sea of Galilee. He would catch up with them, because He wanted to pray for awhile. A terrible storm came up, and the disciples couldn't believe their eyes when they saw Jesus walking across the water toward them! Peter climbed out of the boat and began walking toward Jesus on the water, but then Peter got scared and sank. When Simon Peter looked back at Jesus, he again could walk on the water. Jesus told Peter that he would be the rock on which Jesus would build his church. When Jesus began to tell the disciples that He would go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly, Peter didn't think He should have to do that, but Jesus said it was the way things had to be. When Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter again became afraid. Three times people asked if he knew Jesus, and three times he said he didn't. Read that story here Jesus had great faith in Peter despite his many doubts and mistakes. After the resurrection, Peter was the first disciple to enter the tomb and see that Jesus wasn't there anymore. Jesus appeared to Peter and the other disciples many times. Peter served His Lord long and well after Jesus ascended into heaven. |
