Feeding the 5000

Once Jesus went off by Himself to a place far away from everyone and everything. He wanted to spend some time alone, but people found out where he was and followed him.  There were 5,000 men plus women and children in the crowd that gathered.  There were sick people who wanted to be healed, people with all kinds of problems that they hoped Jesus would help them solve, and some people who just wanted to be close to Him.

Jesus healed the sick and preached to the people who came.  The disciples came to Jesus and said that it was getting dark and Jesus should send everyone home.  Most of the people were tired and very hungry. Jesus said he could not send them away without feeding them first.  The disciples knew that it would cost a lot of money to buy food for the thousands of people who were there. They didn't have any money, and they just didn't see how all the people could be fed.

Jesus asked the crowd if anyone had any food they could share.  A young boy brought Jesus his basket.  It held two fish and five loaves of bread.

It certainly didn't seem to be enough to feed all of the people, but Jesus said a prayer over the food and told his disciples to distribute it among the people.

All the people ate and were satisfied. In fact, the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over!
