God called Moses to climb Mt Sinai,
he was gone a very long time.
And the people became frightened,
They lost faith, they trembled and cried.
 
Take our gold and build us a golden idol!

They gathered the gold,
They melted it down,
They made a gold calf,
On an altar of stone.

They danced and they sang, they worshipped the gold idol.

God gave Moses the 10 commandments,
He wrote them on tablets of stone,
But He saw the golden idol,
and said, "Moses, go back home."

Moses couldn't believe his eyes and his ears!

He threw the tablets,
They smashed on the ground,
He was angry and sad
Couldn't believe what he found.

The calf was destroyed, the people felt bad about the idol.

The gold calf was ground down to powder,
Mixed with water, people drank..
They were shamed by their behaviour,
Lost from God, their hearts all sank.

God had saved His People, yet they had betrayed Him.

The people bowed down,
They prayed to Jahweh,
Begged for forgiveness,
Said they'd mend their ways.

The people repented, but God didn't seem to be listening.

God did hear them,
Yes, He was listening, but the people must atone.
Over time His anger faded,
He would not leave them alone.

God knew that his people had learned a great lesson.

God brought Moses back,
Rewrote His great laws,
The people weren't lonely,
God protected their souls.

God in His great mercy did forgive His people.

Moses then taught them
The 10 Commandments
They were grateful for the law.
They built an ark to hold the tablets,
The stones written on by God.

The people were happy to be at peace with their Creator.

Though they wandered
In the Sinai desert
For the next 40 years,
They did not forget the lesson
Only God can stave off their fears.

Even though they forgot Him, God did not desert them!

God's great mercy
Is ever present,
And if we stay true to Him,
He will comfort and protect us,
Even when we fail and sin.

Just like the Israelites at Mt. Sinai!
