The Importance of Good Friday

Jesus was crucified on Good Friday.  He had come into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to the cheers of his followers. The cheers did not last. Just five days later, he was hung on the cross.

Why do we call this GOOD Friday?  The death of the Son of God doesn't seem like we should think of it as a good thing!  In German, this day is called Mourning Friday, and that seems to make more sense.  However, by His death Jesus demonstrated his love for humankind, and God showed the depth of His love for us by allowing His only Son to die for our failings.  It is a Good Friday because through Jesus' death, Christians were blessed with an assurance of eternal life.  We look beyond Good Friday to Easter Sunday, when Jesus conquered His own death and assured our own eternity when He arose from the dead.

We are saddened by the story of the Cross.  We drape the altar in black and feel the darkness that came over the world at the hour of Jesus' death.  We also know that is not the whole story, for we understand that on Easter Sunday we will be able to celebrate the generous and loving gift we received through Christ's death on the cross ... on Good Friday.
