Purim Noisemaker Craft
The Jewish people celebrate Esther's bravery and the freedom of the Jews in Persia with a celebration that is a little bit like Mardi Gras. People wear masks and costumes, give gifts of food, dance and celebrate. They shake a noisemaker called a "grogger." This month, we'll make a grogger. When your grogger is finished, have someone read the story again. When you hear the name Esther or Mordecai, cheer and clap. When you hear the name Haman, boo and shake your grogger or scratch it with your emory board!

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS Grogger 1.Stand the toilet paper roll on the back side of the sandpaper. Trace a circle around the bottom of the roll on the sandpaper. 2. Cut the circle out of the sandpaper, about 1/4" bigger than the one drawn. 3. Repeat steps one and two to make a second circle. 4. Use the popsicle stick to measure and draw lines evenly from the edge of the circles to the line. Make notches around the circle by cutting the lines, being careful to stop at the circle. 5. On one circle only, cut out one notch. 6. Use a string to measure around the toilet paper roll and cut the string to that length. Use it to measure the width of sandpaper needed to cover the toilet paper roll. Lay the toilet paper roll lengthwise on the back of the sandpaper, and make a mark to show the height of sandpaper needed to cover the toilet paper roll. Cut out the square. 7. Tape or glue the popsicle stick to the inside of one end of the toilet paper roll to make a handle. Make sure at least 2" of the popsicle stick is inside the roll to hold it firmly. Try shaking the roll holding the popsicle stick. If it doesn't hold, add more tape! 8. Use the circle without the notches to cover the other side of the toilet paper roll, rough side out. Wrap duct tape around the edge of the roll to hold the top in place. 9. Fill the roll with beans. 10. Place the other circle over the open end of the roll, positioning the cut-out notch next to the popsicle stick and tape into place. 11. Glue the sandpaper square around the toilet paper roll so that the two sides meet at the popsicle stick. You may need to use a small strip of duct tape to hold the two edges together. 12. Glue a row of pom-poms on the top and bottom of the noisemaker. If you've used duct tape to hold the edges together, add a row of pom-poms there, too! Emory Board 1. Cut a piece of ribbon about 3" longer than the emory board. 2. Cut a slit in one end of the ribbon (about 3" long). 3. Feed each end of the slit through a jingle bell and tie bell into place. 4. Glue ribbon to the emory board. Trim the un-slit end of the ribbon to match the top outline of the emory board. |
