Norwegian Ornament Craft

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 2 sheets of 8 1/2" by 11" paper (different colors)
  • ribbon, raffia, or string

              plus

  • scissors
  • paper punch

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Steps 1 & 21. Put the two pieces of paper one on top of the other and fold both sheets in half.

2. Cut a U shape (bottom of the "u" remains uncut on the fold).
3. Fit them together to form a heart.  You may need to trim the tops to get the heart to look right.

In the picture at left, the red fold is visible to indicate how to fit the two pieces together.  As shown in the picture at the bottom of these instructions, after weaving the strips together, the red fold should be flush with the side of the green paper.
4. Put the two sheets of paper back together. Starting at the fold, cut two slits about two-thirds of the way up.

5. Put the two pieces of the heart together as in step 3. Weave the strips together to make a basket.
"Open" the top red strip. Feed the top green strip between the two sides of the red strip.

Feed the red strip between the sides of the green strip.

Feed the green end through the red strip.

Weave the other two rows, alternating the colors in each row.

6. Punch a hole through both sides of the heart as shown on the left. Cut a length of ribbon, string, or raffia and feed one end through each hole and make a knot to hold it in place.

7. Fill your basket with small candies and put it on the Christmas tree.

Variations:  Use craft scissors to cut strips with more interesting edges.
Smaller hearts, hearts with more strips, or hearts made of felt or other stiff material are more difficult to weave, so may be better projects for older children or adults.
