The Story of Jacob's Ladder

Jacob was the son of Isaac and Rachel.  He went to visit his Uncle Laban.  It was a long walk, and the first night he stopped at a place called Luz.  Jacob didn't stay at a hotel or motel. He gathered some stones to make a pillow for his head and fell asleep outside.

Jacob had a wonderful dream. He saw a ladder reaching from the earth all the way to heaven, with beautiful angels climbing up and down its rungs.  God was standing at the top of the ladder, and he promised Jacob that the land where he was sleeping would one day be his and that his many descendants would be a blessing to all the people on Earth.  God told Jacob that He would protect Jacob and be with him until everything He promised came true.

When Jacob woke up the next morning, he was overwhelmed by the promises God had made and renamed the place where he had slept "Bethel" which meant "House of God."  He used the stones he had gathered for a pillow to make a pillar in honor of God and poured oil over the top of it.
