Hannah's Great Faith

Hannah was so sad.  She and her husband Elkanah had been trying to have a baby for years, but Hannah had never had a child.  Elkanah had a second wife, Penninah, and she had many children.  Penninah seemed to enjoy reminding Hannah that she had many children, while Hannah had none.  Penninah was probably jealous because Elkanah loved Hannah best. Penninah would bully Hannah until she cried!
Every year, Elkanah and his family would make a pilgrimage to a place called Shiloh to worship God.  Each year, Hannah would pray that God would bless her with her own child, but each year Hannah's prayers seemed to go unanswered.
Finally, after Penninah had been particularly mean to her, she went to the temple and prayed with all her heart.  She was praying without speaking, although her lips were moving, and the priest Eli thought Hannah was drunk!  He scolded her, and Hannah explained that she certainly wasn't drunk but instead she was overwhelmed with grief and sadness.  In desperation, she promised God that if He gave her a baby boy, she would give that child back to God.  Eli saw her sadness, and when she finished her prayer, he told her that he hoped God would grant her prayer.
Hannah had a baby!  She named him Samuel, which means "asked of God."  The next time Elkanah and the rest of the family went to Shiloh, she stayed behind because Samuel was too small to make the trip.  However, as soon as he was old enough Hannah brought him to the temple in Shiloh and gave him to the priest Eli to raise Samuel as a servant of God, just as she had promised. She did not abandon her son. She visited him and let him know how much she loved her son, and about the promise she had made to God. It must have been a very hard decision for Hannah to leave her son with Eli at the temple, but she was a woman of great faith and she kept her promise.
God rewarded her faith by giving Elkanah and Hannah more children.  Penninah couldn't bully her any more!
