The Bronze Serpent

   After they left Egypt, the Israelites grew tired of wandering.  They were tired of eating manna instead of "real" food.  They were tired of just about everything, and were angry at both God and Moses for their situation.    

    Poisonous snakes infested their camp.  Many people became very sick and quite a few of them died.  The people saw this as God punishing them for turning away from Him and questioning Moses' leadership.   They asked for forgiveness from Moses and his help to ask for God's forgiveness. They wanted God to rid the camp of serpents.

    God listened to Moses when he told God that the people were sorry.   He told Moses to fashion a serpent of bronze and place it on a staff.  When this was done, Moses placed the staff in the middle of the camp.  People had faith that if they were bitten by a snake, looking at the bronze serpent would heal them.

   During the years that the Israelites wandered in the desert they lost hope and faith many times. Each time, they would return to God, find their faith and ask for forgiveness.  Each time, God forgave them.

     During the season of Lent, each of us can examine our failings and ask for God's forgiveness for our mistakes and His guidance to become better people.  Unlike the Israelites, who saw a bronze serpent on a staff as a reminder of their relationship with God, we have the real life, love and teachings of Jesus to remind us of God's love and forgiveness. Instead of a serpent on a staff, we have the image of Jesus on the Cross to remind us of the price God was willing to pay for us to understand his concern for us!
