Celebrate Thanksgiving Every Day

In the United States we celebrate Thanksgiving on the third Thursday of November. It is a secular (not a religious) holiday that celebrates the harvest and for Christians includes a thanks to God for His gifts.
Giving thanks is an important part of being a Christian. We give thanks to God not just for the food we eat, but for every part of our life here on Earth.   Thanksgiving includes the Father, to whom thanks is given, the Son, who provides our means to grace, and the Holy Spirit, through whom we are connected through Jesus to God.
Our greatest thanks is for the forgiveness of our sins.  We do not have to fear judgement, because through Jesus we have been forgiven for all of our mistakes.
We are thankful for all of creation.  With thanksgiving in our thankss we understand that what God has created is good.  We must be thankful not just for the food we eat, but for the whole world around us -- the trees and flowers, rain and snow, the stars in the sky!
The Bible is the Word of God, and we are thankful for the gift of His wisdom as explained by the prophets, and the Good News of salvation explained by Jesus and reported by the apostles.  The Word of God helps us see things as God would have us understand them.
We have been directed to give thanks for all that happens in our lives.  This can be really hard when something bad happens.  How can we be thankful to God when someone we love dies?  How can we be thankful if we, or someone we care about, is very sick?  This is very difficult!  What psychologists have learned is that people who have gone through hard things are better able to enjoy the happy times.  They can feel the difference.  In times of trouble, we need to reach out to people we love for their help and ask God for strength to get through the sorrow, pain and frustration.  These experiences can help us learn to be better people, help us understand the problems other people face, and make us stronger.  We must struggle to find something good in bad times and this can be very, very hard.  We must trust that the road of life is a long one, and that it will sometimes be very bumpy.  If we trust in God and don't give up, good things will lie ahead.  So we must be thankful.

As Christians, we can enjoy the simple "harvest festival" of Thanksgiving with good food and family, but we must also work to turn our gratitude into a year long festival of thanksgiving for all the gifts bestowed on us by a generous God.
