Saul Becomes the First King of Israel

Israel had been led by judges like Deborah, Gideon, and Samson for as long as anyone could remember.   Samuel was a judge and although he was a good man, Samuel's sons didn't follow God's rules. Samuel was getting old and people really didn't want any of his sons to be in charge!  They decided that they wanted to have a king instead.  Other nations had kings and the people wanted to do the same thing.  Samuel didn't think it was a good idea, but God told him not to worry, that He had a plan.
A young man named Saul was a member of the tribe of Benjamin (there were twelve tribes in Israel). He was very handsome and taller than all the other men in the tribe.  He was also a very good young man who tried always to follow God's will. He was in charge of watching his father's donkeys.  They ran away, so Saul and a servant set out to find them. After searching a long time, Saul thought they should go home. The servant suggested that, because they were close to the town where Samuel lived, it would be a good idea to find him and ask him to seek God's help in finding the donkeys.
Imagine Saul's surprise when Samuel told Saul that God wanted him to be the king of Israel!  He didn't really believe it, but Samuel told Saul specific things that would happen that day.  They all happened, so Saul knew that Samuel wasn't kidding and that God really did want him to be the king.
Samuel and told him to come to a place named Gilgal if Saul decided to accept God's will.  This was the place that Samuel had told the people he would announce who would be king.  Saul went to Gilgal where Samuel introduced him as Israel's first king.
The people were so happy!   Israel had a king!
