Jesus is the Son of God

It did not take very long in his ministry for Jesus to start to draw large crowds.  The poor and ordinary people understood his message and found hope in him.

Jesus asked his disciples who people thought he was.  The disciples told him that some people thought he was John the Baptist, others thought he was a famous prophet - Isaiah or Jeremiah - who had come back to lead the Jews.

Jesus then asked the disciples who they thought he was.  Peter answered quickly that he was Christ, the Son of the living God.  Jesus was pleased by Peter's answer, which showed his true faith.  Jesus said that Peter was the rock on which he would build his church, and that Peter would have the keys to the kingdom of heaven!  He warned the disciples not to tell people about who he really was, because it would cause problems for them all.

For the first time Jesus told his disciples that he would be punished and then killed by the high priests (Pharisees and Saducees) in Jerusalem. He told them there was no need to worry because this was God's plan and he would be resurrected three days after his death.  Peter was still concerned by this, and said that it couldn't happen to Jesus!  Jesus said "Get behind me Satan!" and told Peter to accept what God wanted Jesus to do.  He went on to tell the disciples that it would not be easy to follow him, but the reward would be great, for Jesus had come to save souls. That is still the mission of Jesus' church on earth.  We are all called to take up the cross and follow Jesus.
