Jesus and the Money Changers
Passover is a special time in the Jewish faith. To celebrate, Jesus and his disciples went to Jerusalem where Jesus was greeted like a king on Palm Sunday. He was anxious to visit the beautiful temple, the holiest place in all of Israel and the place where Jesus was anxious to worship and teach about God. When Jesus arrived, he was shocked and saddened to see that the temple didn't look like a place where people worshipped God. It looked like a giant marketplace, with animals for sale. The sound of the animals and people talking and arguing filled the air. It was not a place for peaceful thought and study. People were exchanging money, and there were some who were cheating their customers. Jesus made a whip out of cords and used it to chase all the salesmen from the temple. He shooed the animals out, and tipped over the tables where the money was. He quoted the prophet Isaiah when he told them all that God's house should be a place of prayer. He was angry as he said "You hav made it into a den of robbers!" The priests and Pharisees were very unhappy with Jesus for doing this, and they would spend the next few days plotting a way to get rid of Him so that life in the temple could go back to normal. |
