Lazarus

"Raising of Lazarus" by Henry Ossawa Tanner, about 1896

Just before Jesus and his disciples headed for Jerusalem to celebrate Passover, they were asked by Mary and her sister Martha to come to a small town called Bethany.  Their brother Lazarus was very ill, and they hoped that Jesus could help him. When Jesus and the disciples arrived in Bethany, Lazarus was already dead. His body had been prepared for burial, and he had been placed in tomb - a stone cave with a rock covering its entrance.
Martha led Jesus to the tomb.  Jesus asked that the stone be rolled away.  He said a short prayer and then said "Lazarus, come forth!"  And Lazarus did!
Raising Lazarus was an amazing miracle, and it made the people in the area believe that Jesus was the Messiah and the Son of God.  Some of them told the Pharisees what had happened.
The Pharisees got together to talk about Jesus, His miracle, and His preaching.  They didn't see it as a good thing.  Their reaction was about politics, not faith. They were afraid of losing their own power. They decided that if Jesus came to Jerusalem for Passover they would pay a ransom to anyone who could tell them where Jesus was so they could have Him arrested - and put to death.
