Water into Wine: The Wedding at Cana
"Wedding at Cana" by Italian painter Andrea Boscoli about 1580 | Shortly after Jesus was baptized, he and his mother attended a wedding in a town in Galilee named Cana. At the wedding feast, the wine ran out long before the party was over. Jesus' mother Mary told him about the situation, and at first he didn't think it was his problem. She probably gave him the long look that mothers do when they want their children to do something they aren't too excited about doing. It must have worked, because then Mary told the servants to do whatever Jesus told them to do. Jesus told the servants to fill some large jars with water. Then he told them to fill a pitcher from the jars and bring it to the man in charge of the feast. When the man in charge took a drink of the wine, he thought it was better than the wine originally offered at the party. The disciples that Jesus had just gathered were with him at the wedding, and they were really impressed by Jesus turning water into wine. This was the first miracle that Jesus performed and it convinced the disciples that Jesus was truly a very special messenger from God. For the disciples, this was an epiphany! |
