Miracles

Miracles

Miracles are not contrary to nature, but only contrary to what we know about nature.
Saint Augustine

In both the Old and New Testament, we find stories of things happening that could not be explained.  Jesus did many amazing things. At that time, there was little understanding of science; unusual happenings were viewed as a direct act of God.  Miracles were good things that happened that contradicted people's understanding of how things worked.  Today, we understand a lot more about how things work, but every now and then things happen that can't be explained.  Coincidence? Miracle? Things we just don't understand yet? Some people say that Jesus' ability to do things we can't understand "proves" that he is the Son of God.  True faith doesn't require proof, and isn't afraid to seek logical answers to things we do not yet understand.

All the processes of life are a miraculously complex symphony. St. Augustine believed that creation itself was the first and greatest miracle. As we understand more and more about how the universe works, St. Augustine would say that we are just learning more about God's greatest miracle. Augustine didn't believe that any act of God was "supernatural." All of God's creation is natural and when we look at life and the world around us, we should see that all of it is also a miracle.

Like St. Augustine, we should embrace all of the goodness of life as the result of the miracle of God's creation. Jesus was able to heal the sick, raise the dead, and do things that seemed like miracles at the time, and continue to confound our understanding today.  There are those who offer scientific explanations for some of Jesus' miracles.  A scientific explanation doesn't diminish Jesus' gifts to those around him.  Science is not the enemy of our faith in God.  Science simply is a way to try to understand some of the parts of the miracle of life God has given us.

The true value in life comes from our connection to the rest of God's Creation. It is a value expressed through love, trust, respect, hope, and all the other non-scientific feelings that make living a life the great adventure that it is. Faith helps us get through the tough times, and helps us celebrate the miracle of His power and presence in our lives every day That is the true miracle - the Miracle of Faith.
