Craft Project
When Saul met Jesus on the road to Damascas, Saul changed forever and lived the rest of his life as a completely different person. We say that his experience "transformed" Saul into Paul. Saul's transformation was about his heart and soul - he didn't look different. But in nature there is no symbol of transformation better than that of a caterpillar to a butterfly. That's this month's craft project!
Butterfly Magnet
WHAT YOU NEED
- Coffee filters
- Food coloring
- Clothes pin
- 5 Craft Pom-Poms
- 7 mm craft eyes
- 5" black chenille pipe cleaner
- magnetic strip (adhesive on one side)
plus
- glue
- water
- paint brush
- scissors
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
1. Attach the magnetic strip to what will become the bottom of the caterpillar. 2. Create the caterpillar's antennae by bending the pipe cleaner as shown in the photo at left. 3. Glue the antennae into place on the underside of the clothes pin and let dry thoroughly. 4. Glue eyes onto one pom-pom to make the caterpillar's head 5. Glue the caterpillar's head into place, use more pom-poms to complete the caterpillar's body.
6. Mix food coloring with water and "paint" a multi-colored design on the coffee filter. This will create pastel shaded "wings." For brighter colors, use tempura or other paint. (Using thicker paint will make the butterfly heavier, requiring a stronger magnet.) 7. Place the coffee filter on a paper towel to dry. The coffee filters need to dry for about an hour. It is possible to place them in the oven on the lowest possible setting to speed up the process. However, it isn't a bad thing to give the caterpillar a little life of its own! When the coffee filters are completely dry: 8. Fold the coffee filter in half, then fold it as you would a fan 9. Cut a slit through half of the filter. 10. Carefully open the clothespin and slide "wings" into place, slit on top. 11. Pull each half of the wings forward. 12. Cut a short slit to separate back wings.
