The Story of Creation
Click the graphic above for a larger picture in a new window | How Long Is a Day and How Did God Make the World? In the story of Creation in Genesis, we are told that God made the world in which we live in just 6 days, and rested on the 7th day. Some people think that each day was a 24 hour day, and that God accomplished all of this just by thinking about it, as if He had a magic wand. We say that one year of our lives is like seven dog years - when a dog is 10 years old, that would be the same as a person who is 70 years old. Some have said that each of our lives begins and ends in a blink of God's eye. If we think about that, a day for God could be millions or even billions of people years, just like one year for us is like seven dog years. We are a part of an amazing and complex creation. It doesn't really matter how long it took God to create the world we live in or exactly how He did it. We can be thankful we live on a beautiful blue planet full of many different kinds of living things. Our lives and our planet are truly gifts from God, who in ways that are beyond our human understanding, created and sustains us all. |
In the beginning, God was all alone. The Bible tells us that God created the universe and everything in it. In the story in the first chapters of Genesis, we learn that God started Creation by separating darkness from light. Then He made the sky. The next step in His creation process was to create the world we live in. He separated dry land (continents and islands) and oceans, rivers, and lakes. He filled the land with plants and trees. God then put the sun, moon and stars in the sky and created the cycle of the seasons. He filled the oceans with fish and the sky with birds. God created all of the animals and, finally, God created humans. After all this hard work, God took time to rest and enjoy all that He had made. |
