Pastor Paul Bortnem

In 2006, Concordia and Scandia Lutheran Church in Averill dissolved their long-standing parish partnership and, for the first time since the 19th century, Concordia became a stand-alone congregation.

Pastor Paul was called as Concordia's first pastor.

Pastor Bortnem's final message (June 2007 issue of Concordia News)

Over a year ago I began work at Concordia as your pastor. You had no idea of how it would go and neither did I.

We did many things. We sold the parsonage. We ended a long standing parish alignment with Scandia and went on our own. We had Lenten Services, an educational speaker on the Moslem faith, talked about issues like climate change, the Iraq war, poverty, homelessness, and other current topics. We started a Sunday school and confirmation program.

We’re also looking at a celebration, 135 years of ministry at Concordia. People are excited and friends and family are gathering from near and far for this anniversary celebration on Father’s Day 2007.

We will also be looking at what we may do in the future for pastoral ministry as I have turned in my resignation effective the end of June. It could be an exciting time, cause even though my leaving may be disappointing to some of you, it may also be a blessing in disguise for the ministry at Concordia. Whatever may be, know that we have loved working with you, getting to know you and we have also appreciated the care that you have given us.  In all things God works for good for those who love the Lord.  I thank you for the privilege of being your pastor.
